Mount Washington State Park, a 59-acre parcel perched on the summit of the Northeast's highest peak, is surrounded by the extensive 750,000-acre White Mountain National Forest. On a clear day, views from the 6,288-foot summit extend beyond New Hampshire as far as 130 miles to Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Quebec, and the Atlantic Ocean.
The Sherman Adams building, a modern summit building, houses The Sherman Adams Visitor Center, a cafeteria, restrooms, gift shops, the Mount Washington Observatory and its museum. The historic TipTop House is located adjacent to the summit building.
Hours of Operation:
- The Tip Top House opens weekends only Memorial Day weekend (May 23-25), then full-time from June 27 through October 12, 2009. Operating hours are 10am-3:45pm, weather permitting. It will not be open on days with rain or high winds.
- Food and Gift operations opens May 16, 2009. Operating hours are 10am-5pm, weather permitting. It closes for the season on Sunday, October 18, weather permitting.
- The Sherman Adams Visitor Center opens May 16, 2009. Operating hours are 9am-6pm on Mondays through Fridays, and 8am-6pm on Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting. The Center closes for the season on Sunday, October 18, weather permitting.

Hikers, please take notice: Even though the park plans to be open daily through late October, hikers should be advised that, during periods of extreme weather when the Auto Road and Cog Railway must temporarily close, there are absolutely no rides down the mountain. Hikers attempting the peak this time of year should be well prepared with winter gear to safely travel through the extremes in weather but also to be fit enough to hike up AND BACK DOWN! | |
